How oftenAt least every 12 months, before the expiration date of the current sticker. Inspections expire on the last day of the month punched on the sticker.
Change of ownerWhen a vehicle is registered in a different name, the new registrant must have it inspected. An inspection issued to the previous registrant is not valid.
WhereA licensed station displaying an official sign (yellow and black, “Official Inspection Station”), by a certified motor vehicle inspector.
EmissionsMost vehicles get an emissions inspection at the same time as the safety inspection (see the emissions guide).
FeeDepends on the inspection group. The DMV publishes it in the VS-77 Inspection Groups and Fee Chart.

Repairs and reinspection

The inspection station must have your permission before it starts any repairs. You are not required to have the vehicle repaired or reinspected at the station that did the first inspection: you may use any registered repair shop or repair the vehicle yourself. The vehicle must then pass a new inspection at an inspection station of your choice before a sticker is issued.

Appointments

When a customer asks a station to inspect a vehicle, the station must inspect any vehicle it is licensed to inspect. If it cannot do so promptly, it must give you, in writing, an appointment date within eight working days. The station can ask for a deposit, but not more than the inspection fee.

Fines for an expired or missing sticker

  • Sticker expired within the past 60 days: fine of $25 to $50.
  • Sticker expired more than 60 days, or no sticker: fine of $50 to $100.
  • A mandatory state surcharge of $88 ($93 in town and village courts) is added to the fine.
  • A parked vehicle with no sticker or an expired sticker can receive a parking ticket.

It is also a misdemeanor for an inspector to knowingly issue, or a motorist to knowingly accept, a sticker without a full and proper inspection.
